How to evaluate an AI marketing agency before you hire one

Seven concrete questions that separate a real process from a marketing label.

By the markmetAI Team ·

"AI marketing agency" is now on a lot of homepages, and the label alone tells you almost nothing about what you're actually buying. Here are the specific questions worth asking before you sign anything, based on where these engagements typically go wrong.

1. Who approves anything that spends money or goes public?

This is the single most important question. A well-run AI marketing agency has a human approval step before ad spend, published content, or account changes go live. If the answer is vague, treat that as a red flag rather than a detail to sort out later.

2. What's actually automated versus human-reviewed?

Ask for a specific example: one task, start to finish, with each step labeled AI or human. A real process can walk you through this in a few minutes. A marketing label alone can't.

3. What access do they need to my accounts, and is it reversible?

Ask for read-only versus manage access broken down per platform (ad accounts, analytics, CMS, CRM), and how credentials are handled. You should be able to revoke access cleanly at any point.

4. How is my data used and stored?

Get a plain-language answer on whether your data trains anything beyond your own account, how long it's retained, and who else can see it.

5. What happens when something breaks?

Automated workflows fail sometimes. Ask what the escalation path looks like: who notices, how fast, and what the fallback is while it's being fixed.

6. Can you see the reasoning, not just the output?

A recommendation without a visible rationale is hard to trust or improve on. Ask to see the "why" behind a sample recommendation, not just the final deliverable.

7. What does the pricing actually reflect?

Ask what you're paying for: execution time, tool costs, account management, or all three. This is where the cost difference from a traditional agency usually becomes concrete: see our AI marketing agency vs. traditional agency comparison for the fuller picture.

The short version

A legitimate AI marketing agency can answer all seven questions specifically and in plain language. Hesitation, vagueness, or "trust the process" answers on approvals and data access are the clearest signal to walk away. If you want to see what a workable brief and approval process actually looks like from the client side, our piece on briefing an AI marketing system without babysitting it covers that from the other direction.
